A Good Day

We've learned quickly over the last week that there are good days and bad days as we go forward with Evelyn.  Furthermore, we've learned that just because yesterday was a good day doesn't mean today will be as well or vice versa.  The cliche "take one day at a time" doesn't feel so cliched to us anymore.  It's much more real than that.  I think it's been a good life lesson as well, K and I have always spent a lot of time worrying about trips, parties, work events, vacation time, etc. that sometimes we haven't focused on and enjoyed the day we are living.  We talked a lot about enjoying each day, but actually doing that is a different story.  It's too bad that sometimes it takes big things to make us realize what we should be doing all the time.  Hopefully we'll be able to keep the mindset we have now for sometime.

In that light today has been a good day for Evelyn on two fronts.  On Tuesday, after meeting with 3 different doctors, we decided to start administering a drug to try and help Evie fight off her virus.  I say try and help because despite the prevalence of CMV in our society modern medicine has largely ignored the virus and thus there are no vaccinations or even any treatment plans that definitely work.  The doctors think the drug we are giving her works but they aren't positive.  Not enough data has been collected or studies done.  The drug comes with some possible side effects and there is a worry that Evelyn simply won't tolerate it.  That she could vomit, lose weight, have reflux, etc.  K & I felt it was worth the risk, worth it so try and save Evelyn's ability to hear as well as stop the virus from bouncing around in her brain.  We have to try.  We have to do something.  We started the treatment Wednesday morning and after 33 hours she's doing great.  We are thankful for that.

In addition to the treatment going well, the doctors removed the slight oxygen assistance Evelyn has been getting for the past 5 days or so.  K & I never really thought she needed the oxygen.  The doctors thought she did.  Today it looks like the doctors were wrong.  Her oxygen saturation levels have been great all day, in fact better than when she had the cannula in.  She needs to prove that she has no issues breathing on her own before they will release her from the NICU.  We are thankful for this too.

To quote the iconic Ice Cube, "I gotta say, it was a good day."
